Introduction to Food Preservation

£40.00

Wednesday 11 February

6.30 - 8.30pm

Imagine an evening spent in the kitchen with your most encouraging, food-loving friend - the one who makes everything feel easy, joyful and entirely doable. That’s exactly the spirit of this workshop. We’ll explore the beautiful, practical world of food preservation and the many ways humans have been extending the harvest for as long as we’ve been growing food.

Whether you’ve got an allotment bursting with produce, love buying local, or simply want to waste less and enjoy more, this workshop will show you just how simple (and fun) preserving can be.

What to Expect:

Welcome Drink

Meet your fellow preservers in The Farm Kitchen, settle in and get ready to demystify the whole process.

Why We Preserve Food

From ancient traditions to modern kitchens, we’ll talk about the real reasons behind preserving — saving abundance, reducing waste, boosting flavour, building a pantry you can rely on, and feeling connected to the seasons.

Breaking Down the Barriers

Don’t have fancy equipment? Short on space? Unsure where to start? We’ll clear away the myths, the overwhelm and the “I’m-not-sure-I-can-do-this” feeling. Spoiler: you absolutely can.

The 12 Food Preservation Techniques

A friendly, upbeat tour through the main ways people have been keeping food delicious and shelf-stable for centuries:

  1. Pickling – Bright, punchy and endlessly customisable.

  2. Salting – One of the oldest techniques; simple, effective, delicious.

  3. Fermenting – The magical, bubbly world of microbes doing good work.

  4. Sugar – Jams, jellies and syrups that capture sunshine in a jar.

  5. Smoke – Deep, savoury flavour and long-lasting results.

  6. Freezing – Everyday, practical, brilliant.

  7. Refrigeration – Short-term preservation with big benefits.

  8. Alcohol – From preserved fruits to infused spirits.

  9. Oil – Protecting ingredients and carrying flavour beautifully.

  10. Root Cellaring – Old-school cool storage; simple and incredibly effective.

  11. Dehydration – Making a proud comeback — lightweight, long-lasting, easy to store.

  12. Freeze Drying – The modern method: bone-dry ingredients stored at room temperature for ages.

We’ll chat about when and why you’d use each technique, what’s easiest to start with, and how to keep it all safe and tasty.

Hands-On Preserving

Together we’ll make a jar using one of the simplest, most joyful techniques — something you can confidently recreate at home.

Take-Home Jar

Leave with your own pot of promise (see what we did there) and the know-how to keep experimenting.

Expect a friendly, relaxed evening full of “Oh! That’s actually really easy” moments, good conversation and the warm satisfaction of learning a life-long skill.
